Presentation Overview:

MBEC is excited to present a unique opportunity to gain insights into the building envelope field through the lens of three Winnipeg-based architectural firms. This event will showcase a selection of local projects, offering attendees a behind-the-scenes look at innovative designs, creative problem-solving, and the practical challenges faced during the development of these projects.

Each of the three speakers will delve into key aspects of their work, highlighting points of interest such as cutting-edge building technologies, material selection, and energy efficiency strategies. Expect to hear about unexpected encounters that arose during design and construction phases and how these were overcome with ingenuity and expertise.

Attendees can anticipate an engaging and interactive session, where real-world case studies are brought to life by experienced professionals. This forum is an excellent opportunity to expand your understanding of the building envelope's critical role in architecture while networking with like-minded peers and gaining inspiration for your own projects.

Speaker Bio:

Lindsay Oster

Lindsay is an architect and principal of Prairie Architects Inc., a firm specializing in sustainable architecture for many institutional, commercial, residential, adaptive reuse and community-based projects. Lindsay has been a LEED AP since 2008 and has been involved in the design of numerous certified schools, childcare centres and housing projects. Evolving with and responding to the urgency for buildings to address the climate crisis, Lindsay has more recently expanded her sustainable expertise to include a stronger focus on more adaptive, resilient and regenerative architecture. To that end, Lindsay became a Certified Passive House Designer (CPHD) in 2021 and received her Living Future Accreditation (LFA) in 2023.

Lindsay regularly participates as a guest studio critic at the University of Manitoba in the Department of Architecture and has given guest lectures for the faculties of Architecture, Engineering and Environment, Earth, and Resources. Lindsay participates at a national level with committee work for the Examination for Architects in Canada (ExAC) and is a member of the Public Affairs Committee for the Manitoba Association of Architects (MAA). She was inducted into the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada’s College of Fellows in 2022 and served as president of the MAA in 2019/2020.

Byron Cook

Byron has been a part of the Manitoba Architectural and Engineering community for nearly 44 years, a large percentage of those years spent with Stantec.

Byron has contributed his services and skills to many significant projects across the Province. He is normally involved in projects from conceptual design through to completion, thus providing him the opportunity to see projects through a different lens.

His role on building envelope restoration projects have provided challenges which one is not exposed to when working with new construction projects.

Understanding what the visual building review presents, interpreting what the existing construction drawings illustrate and what building changes have occurred, requires insight in how far one peels back the layers to prepare for an envelope renovation. And one never knows what is hiding behind those layers.

Andrew Lewthwaite

Andrew Lewthwaite, a Senior Associate Architect at Public City Architecture, brings over 15 years of experience in public social infrastructure to his role. Since joining the firm in 2009, he has served as the lead architect in numerous institutional, commercial, and educational projects across Manitoba. Andrew brings his deep skillset and experience in the design and development of inclusive and durable community environments. With extensive experience in complex renovation and retrofit projects, and consistent involvement through design to construction administration phases of the work, his focus centres on establishing successful deployment of design concepts and ideas in the real world of construction in collaborative fashion.
