Building Envelope Research at the Alternative Village
When
April 12, 2012
3:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Location
The Alternative Village located at the U of M
The Alternative Village is an approximately 1-1/2 acre site on the campus of the University of Manitoba. The Village is a venue for research, testing, industry partnerships and providing students with hands-on experience.
The principal structure on the site is a 4200 sq.ft strawbale building. This "researchable" building is being studied and houses research activities. Some of the projects the Village is currently involved with are:
* building envelope studies of seven types of walls systems. Thermal, moisture, and energy use are monitored to provide comparisons between various metals
* a study to evaluate the performance of a solar energy greenhouse and develop a computer model for designers. Utilizing a combination of local materials in conjunction with a quick-assembly frame, the research is focused on the thermal performance of the system and rammed earth solar wall
* structural insulated panel (SIPs) research
The presentation on April 12th will provide participants with an overview of the Alternative Village, some results of the research, a chance to meet research students and an opportunity to see if there might be a way you can become involved with the Village.
