Presentation Overview:

Balconies are known to introduce a weak point in a building’s envelope by allowing heat to dissipate to the exterior environment. Most solutions to this problem are currently too cost-prohibitive to see wide spread use in the North American building industry. Through a partnership between the UofM and Red River College, research was carried out to determine the thermal and structural performance of a novel, cast-in-place balcony thermal break. The results showed immense potential to lower a building’s heating needs using the newly developed system. The results of the study will be reviewed and discussed.
