Topic Overview

Beginning in the summer of 2016, Republic Architecture Inc. took on the design of their New Office (RAINO). Their new home, located at 385 St. Mary Avenue in Winnipeg, Manitoba, was originally built in 1958 for the New York Life Insurance Company. Ten months after occupancy, members of the team reflect on the opportunities and challenges inherent to the renovation of a mid-century modern building to current standards of design and performance. As more of Canada’s impressive stock of mid-century modern buildings come to the end of their serviceable lives, the opportunities for re-imagining these structures with an eye on sustainability is immense. As a case study, this talk will examine the intersection of a diverse range of subjects, including historic preservation, building design, energy performance, and building envelope. With input from client representatives, as well as project design and sustainability team members, discussion topics will include:

•              Building Character Defining Elements

•              Design Concept

•              Thermal Effectiveness of the Envelope

•              Curtain Wall Upgrades

•              Building Energy Analysis

•              Air Tightness

•              Actual Energy Cost – Before and After
