MECB Part 1 - Navigating Building Envelope Requirements: It's Really Not That Painful

The Manitoba Energy Code for Buildings (MECB) introduced thermal requirements for the building envelope.  As with any change in codes, there are challenges in determining what is required and how best to design buildings which comply.  Business as usual is not an option, as we re-think material selection and how materials are incorporated into assemblies.  This session will review the specific requirements in Part 3 of the MECB and provide practical design considerations to meet these requirements in a cost effective manner.  

Topics include:

• Effective vs. nominal R-values
• How thermal bridging impacts effective R-values
• Determining the U-value of an assembly
• Fenestration - calculating U values of glazing, frames and spandrels
• Using simple trade off to your advantage
• Owner / property manager perspective on how building design and construction has changes since the adoption of the code
