Manitoba Hydro Place - Lessons Learned

Manitoba Hydro Place, Manitoba Hydro's corporate headquarters, located in Winnipeg, Manitoba, is the most energy efficient office tower in North America and was the first certified LEED Platinum commercial building in Canada. Its superior indoor air quality with 100 per cent fresh air, 24 hours a day provides its 2000 occupants with the highest quality of space.  Three years after the building was fully operational, the design team was brought together to discuss the successes and challenges of the design process and the resultant design.  Tom Akerstream, the individual responsible for ensuring that Manitoba Hydro Place was, and continues to be, the most energy efficient and sustainable office tower in North America, will present an insider's view of the findings and conclusions of that meeting and will speak on the following matters:

  • The building's unique design process
  • Multiple building envelope features - the key to the building's success
  • Biggest challenges in design and construction
  • Is the building performing as expected?
  • Results of data collected over the last 6 years
  • What changes were made to optimize how it responds to its occupants and the environment?
  • What would we have done differently?
  • Was it all worth it?
  • Next steps
