Building Better Buildings

Session Overview

This session will outline the principles of building high performance buildings that are simultaneously healthier, safer, more comfortable, more durable and more energy effiicient without compromising cost effectiveness.  This workshop will help participants understand the key building science rules that architects and engineers use to evaluate and specify building envelope components.  This knowledge will empower participants to make more cost effective building decisions and avoid many of the risks associated with every changing building technologies.

• Architects and designers, commercial general contractors, trades and building suppliers, building officials, appraisers and energy raters

Learning Highlights:

• Understanding the physics of how buildings work - the flow of Air, Heat and Moisture and how this affects building performance
• How buildings work as a system with checks and balances
• Defining the most important, cost effective, technical aspects of high performance buildings - the ten things you should be doing by now and where we are headed
• Identifying case studies of the most effective construction details and methods to meet new code requirements and access green and energy efficiency programs such as ENERGY STAR or LEED building 

Speaker Biography

Gord Cooke is a Professional Engineer with over 25 years experience in the residential building industry as a manufactures, agent, consultant and trainer.  Gord is an effective and passionate educator and advocate for implementing better building practices and products.  He has developed and delivered numerous technical and sales training courses across Canada and the US.  He combines aspects of advanced building science, indoor air quality, mechanical systems and energy efficient building programs, to assist builders and contractors in promoting the technological improvements of new houses. 

Gord has been proud to present at over 100 national and international events each year on behalf of industry organizations, manufacturers, utilities and government agencies.

With his building science, HVAC and IAQ expertise, combined with his refined presentation skills, Gord encourages an interactive approah.  Be ready to participate, ask questions and learn from Gord and your fellow participants.
