Presentation Overview:

Assiniboine Park is embarking on the third phase of the $200 million Imagine a Place Campaign with the design of Canada’s Diversity Gardens. Canada’s Diversity Gardens is a $97.8 million horticultural attraction that will be located in the southeast corner of Assiniboine Park. It will have four cornerstone attractions including The Leaf, and three main outdoor spaces — the Indigenous Peoples’ Gardens, the Cultural Mosaic Gardens and The Grove.

The Leaf is one of the most unique projects underway in Canada, and technically innovative. The construction is 60% complete. MBEC members will be interested in the design and technology.

Doug Corbett is the Executive Architect for the project, providing advocacy and consulting to Assiniboine Park Conservancy and the international consultant team. He will present the design for the project and discuss the unique aspects of the iconic Leaf building including the design process, innovative ETFE and cable-net roof structure, environmental challenges related to the horticultural biomes, and sustainable strategies the Park is attempting with the project and the Development of Canada’s Diversity Gardens.

Speaker Bio's:

Doug Corbett

Executive Architect, Canada’s Diversity Gardens Project

Doug Corbett is an architect specializing in the design and planning of ecologically responsive buildings. His completed projects have been recognized nationally and internationally for innovation in design and green technology features, which has become the signature for his design work. He and colleagues at Smith Carter were recognized with a 2010 Canadian Architect Design of Excellence Award for the new Winnipeg Women and Newborn Hospital currently under construction. Doug studied engineering at the University of British Columbia, and earned a Masters degree in Architecture from the University of Manitoba. He is a strong advocate of partnering concepts in the project delivery process with emphasis on design and sound environmental building practices. He has taught design studio at the University of Manitoba, Faculty of Architecture and has lectured on design theory and professional practice. One of the biggest lessons learned, is that no single person is responsible for an entire project and that the success of any building depends on the collaborations between individuals on the building team. Doug was the founding partner of Corbett Cibinel Architects in Winnipeg. He was the lead architect on the Red River College Princess Street campus, winning national and international awards for design and sustainability. Doug merged with Smith Carter Architects as a shareholder and design principal in 2008. Smith Carter was acquired by WSP Global In March 2012, and Doug resigned to start Corbett Architecture specializing in project and design consulting.
